Getting a US Phone Number for Your Business From Abroad
Why a US business phone number helps non-resident companies with customers, banks and platforms, the options available (VoIP, business phone systems, SIM), and the verification pitfalls to avoid.

A US phone number makes your company look local to American customers, gives you a number to list on your website and profiles, and can help with some account set-ups. But not every US number works for every purpose, especially security codes. Here is what to know.
Why get one?
- Customer trust: US customers prefer calling or texting a local number.
- Professional listings: a US number on your website, invoices, marketplace profiles and business listings.
- Supplier and partner contact: easier for US businesses to reach you.
- Separation: keep business calls separate from your personal mobile.
The options
| Option | How it works | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Virtual phone (VoIP) service | App-based number with calling, texting and forwarding | Cheap, quick, works anywhere | Some banks and platforms don't accept VoIP numbers for security codes |
| Business phone system | Multiple users, extensions, IVR menus, call routing | Professional, scalable | More cost and setup |
| US mobile SIM / eSIM | A real mobile line from a US carrier | Accepted almost everywhere for SMS codes | Harder to get and keep active from abroad |
| Toll-free number | 800/888-style number | National brand image | Not suitable for SMS verification |
The verification pitfall
Banks, payment platforms and some marketplaces send security codes by SMS and may block or flag VoIP numbers for verification. If the only number on your bank account is a VoIP number that stops receiving codes, you can be locked out.
Our advice:
- Register a number that reliably receives SMS internationally for security codes. Often this is your personal mobile, which many banks accept even if it isn't a US number.
- Use the US VoIP number for customers and public listings.
- Keep a backup method of authentication (authenticator app, backup codes) wherever possible.
- Keep numbers active. Some services recycle numbers that are inactive or unpaid.
Choosing a service
Look for:
- texting as well as calling,
- a mobile app and call forwarding to your country,
- voicemail transcription,
- business hours routing across time zones,
- number porting if you change providers later, and
- reasonable pricing for international forwarding.
Consistency
Use the same business number across your website, Google listing, marketplaces and invoices. If a bank or platform has a different number on file for security, that's fine; just know which is which and keep both current. See how to avoid a bank account closure.
Do I need a US number to form a company?
No. Company formation, the EIN and most bank applications do not require a US phone number. Some bank applications ask for one; many accept an international number. See documents needed to form a US company remotely.
