Do You Need an SSN or ITIN for Stripe or PayPal With a US LLC?
What Stripe, PayPal and other payment platforms ask for when a non-resident owns the US company: EIN, owner verification, the SSN/ITIN question and tips for smooth onboarding.

For many founders, the whole point of a US company is to accept payments through Stripe, PayPal and other American platforms. Then the onboarding form asks for an SSN, and panic sets in. Do you need one? Can you use an ITIN? Will the account be rejected?
This guide explains what payment platforms actually verify for a foreign-owned US company, where the SSN/ITIN question comes from, and how to make onboarding smooth.
Two separate checks: the company and the people
Every payment platform runs two sets of checks, often called KYB (know your business) and KYC (know your customer).
The company
- Legal name exactly as registered with the state.
- EIN, matching the IRS record for that name.
- Business address, usually a US address.
- A US bank account in the company's name for payouts.
- Website and description of what you sell, prices and policies.
The people
Platforms must identify the individuals who own a significant share of the company (typically 25% or more) and the person who controls it (a director, officer or manager). For each, they collect name, date of birth, address and identity verification.
Where the SSN question comes from
The SSN field exists because most US-owned businesses are run by people who have one, and the platform uses it to verify identity and for tax reporting. For non-US persons, platforms usually provide an alternative: verifying the owner with a passport and foreign address instead.
How this works differs between platforms and changes over time:
- Some flows let non-US owners verify with a passport alone.
- Some ask for an SSN or ITIN for the controlling person, and accept an ITIN where no SSN exists.
- Some decide based on the country the owner lives in.
So the honest answer is: many non-resident owners onboard without an ITIN, but having one removes a common obstacle.
When an ITIN helps
An ITIN can make onboarding easier when:
- the platform's flow insists on a personal US taxpayer number for the controlling person,
- your country of residence is not supported for passport-only verification, or
- you were asked for additional verification and want to provide a stronger profile.
An ITIN also has uses beyond payments; see what is an ITIN and do you need one.
Tips for smooth onboarding
- Match your IRS records exactly. Use the company name and address exactly as they appear on your EIN letter and state filing. Small differences, such as "LLC" vs "L.L.C.", trigger reviews.
- Have a real website. Clear products or services, prices, contact details, terms, refund and privacy policies.
- Describe the business accurately. If you sell software subscriptions, say so; do not pick a vague category.
- Use a US business bank account in the company's name for payouts. See our US business bank account guide.
- Avoid restricted products. Each platform publishes lists of restricted and prohibited businesses. If you are in a higher-risk sector, read payment gateways for high-risk businesses.
- Respond quickly to verification requests and send exactly what is asked for.
After approval: staying in good standing
Payment accounts can be paused or closed later if activity changes suddenly, chargebacks rise, or information becomes outdated. Keep your company in good standing with the state, file your annual returns, and update the platform if your products, ownership or address change.
